NVIO™ is an ISO 17025 lab-tested ASTM D5511-18 eco-friendly plastic card solution that is available with or without NVIO™ magnetic stripe. Its core is offered in paper or Bio Teslin™. It contains organic additives that cause the product to decompose, through a series of chemical and biological processes, in the landfill treatment environment. These additives, lab-tested under the scientifically proven ASTM D5511-18 methods, show accelerated rates of biodegradation*.
What makes NVIO™ made products unique is that the entire piece is composed of biodegradable elements, from the core to the laminate, including the magnetic stripe. A word from Biodegradability experts and scientists at Enviro Remediation & Research Laboratory, Dr. Harsh and Dr. Deepali is that, “After testing over 100s of samples under anaerobic conditions in lab that resembles the landfill conditions as per ASTM D5511/ ISO 15985, we have found that the samples made of PLA, cellulose or organic material have biodegraded completely.**

The Science Behind NVIO™
How it works
Ingredients in the organic additives used to treat NVIO™ allow the formation of a biofilm coating on the plastic film. The biofilm is made up of colonies of microorganisms that penetrate the plastic and send out a chemical signal to attract other microbes found in nature. Together, they feast on the polymer chains, breaking down the chemical bonds. This results in a rapid acceleration of the biodegradation* process when compared to untreated plastic material.
*Biodegradation rates of NVIO™ Cards and magnetic stripe were measured according to the ASTM D5511 test method. Tests were conducted using 20% to 30% solids content; solids content in naturally wetter landfills range from 55% to 65%, while the driest landfills may reach 93%. Actual biodegradation rates will vary in biologically-active landfills depending on temperature, solid content, and moisture levels of the landfill.

About SSI Cards
Started in 1969, SSI pioneered early barcodes on laminated ID cards in the 1970s. With security in mind, a “black bar” system was created to conceal the barcode. In the 80s, SSI went on to create the first Telecard for a company that rhymes with Yay Bee and Tea (a very popular candy-loving extraterrestrial adorned the front of some of these early cards!). Later, Blockbuster sought SSI’s help for two new cards. The “Universal Card” was membership CR80, broken off from a plastic postcard mailer, that could be used in Blockbuster stores across the United States. A card for each store was no longer needed. The second card used an encoded magnetic stripe to identify store information and debit transactions. That was the first gift card. Now that retailers could have one card to represent all their locations, durable Teslin key tags soon followed. The new substrate was commissioned by SSI to provide a card with a 10-year lifespan that could be used for international ID applications. 55 million voter IDs and the first secure election in Mexico in the mid-90s were also a result of these technologies.
In the 2000s and using similar technology to the “Universal Card”, SSI went on to develop the Acclaim Mailer. And now, SSI has a new first…the NVIO™ Card. NVIO™ is an environmentally friendly plastic postcard mailer and/or a 30 Mil magnetic stripe card that has been tested to ASTM-D5511 specs. Even the mag stripe is green, figuratively and literally.
